The Gaol Restaurant - History

The White Lion dates back to 1650 when it was originally a Police Station. Our current Old Gaol Restaurant was once a holding gaol for prisoners awaiting sentencing (original features include bars at the window and fireplace with prison graffiti still visible - oh and some say a friendly spirit!).

It is reported that the White Lion was once connected via and underground tunnel to Wilton Castle to allow religious dignitaries to escape, however this tunnel has long since been blocked off.

The White Lion became an Inn in the 18th century.

These days you will only be captivated by the delightful dining atmosphere in this Bistro style restaurant.

This part of the White Lion is away from the general buzz of this lively pub. A great place for a quiet meal or intimate dinner.

Unusual Occurrences

It has been reported by several previous landlords that numerous unexplained activity has happened at The White Lion.

Whilst the present owners have only experienced child-like pranks such as things been thrown on the floor when no-one was present (these items were picked up by the landlady and stored away, only to reappear strewn on the floor some 15 minutes later).

Previous owners have experienced children running up the stairs, table mats and cutlery being moved in the Old Gaol, and closed windows found opened – it is worth noting that no ghosts have ever been actually seen ... yet!
