The White Lion dates back to 1650 when it was
originally a Police Station. Our current Old Gaol Restaurant was
once a holding gaol for prisoners awaiting sentencing (original
features include bars at the window and fireplace with prison
graffiti still visible - oh and some say a friendly spirit!).
It is reported that the White Lion was once
connected via and underground tunnel to Wilton Castle to allow
religious dignitaries to escape, however this tunnel has long since
been blocked off.
The
White Lion became an Inn in the 18th century.
These days you will only be captivated by the delightful dining atmosphere in this Bistro style restaurant. This part of the White Lion is away from the general buzz of this lively pub. A great place for a quiet meal or intimate dinner. Unusual Occurrences
It has been reported by several previous landlords that numerous unexplained activity has happened at The White Lion.
Whilst the present owners have only experienced child-like pranks such as things been thrown on the floor when no-one was present (these items were picked up by the landlady and stored away, only to reappear strewn on the floor some 15 minutes later).
Previous owners have experienced children running up the stairs, table mats and cutlery being moved in the Old Gaol, and closed windows found opened – it is worth noting that no ghosts have ever been actually seen ...
